Doge Land (Doge Landian: Etmtsll [itmtsɭ], Mountaintonian: Итмцл [itmt͡sl]), officially the Second Republic of Doge Land (Doge Landian: Ntddlt Nrttws ella Etmtsll [ntddlt nrttws iɭä itmtsɭ], Mountaintonian: Ховмарексюд Итмцл [xovmareksʲud itmt͡sl]) is a federal semi-presidential constitutional republic in Cordilia. Doge Land is bordered by Ryccia to the west, Belvaria to the south, the South Pacific Ocean to the east, and Kantamaria to the north. It is well-known for its lush tropical rainforests and high mountain peaks. Mainland Doge Land has an area of 252364 km2. With the Shibe Islands, the total land area of Doge Land is 274179 km2. Its total population is 67,134,215, according to the 2015 census. Its capital and cultural center is Doge Land City, with its commercial and religious center being its largest city, Bepono.

The first people to settle the Doge Land area were the Wenlandi in about 7,000 BCE. Throughout the 9th to 5th century BCE, the area was the location of several wars from the rise and fall of the Shibe Empire. In the 13th century CE, the First Doge Landian Republic was proclaimed after the conquering of the Wenlandi Theocracy and finishing off their several client states. Doge Land's final rival, the Mountaintonians, were conquered in the 17th century, finishing the borders for what is considered Doge Land today.

Doge Land has a food stamp system, where someone could get the amount of food needed for their family for the week from a government-sponsored food bank. Doge Land ranks high in quality of life and education. Most people in Doge Land will get 14 years of education. The nation provides universal healthcare, to an extent. It has a mixed-market agricultural and mining-based economy. Its main exports are coffee, tea, bananas, coal, and rare earth metals. It is legally a secular state, however the vast majority of Doge Landians are religious.

Etymology

The name "Doge Land" first appeared after a visit from the Austral Empire. When the Austral Empire first visited, the people of Doge Land called themselves "dusy" ([dɑse]) in standard Doge Landian. However, the Australs first encountered south-coastal Doge Landian, who pronounced "dusy" as [dod͡ʒe], making it sound like "Doge". The Australs called the land Doge Land and the people who lived there Doge Landians as a result.

It is believed that the Doge Landian name, "Etmtsll", and the Mountaintonian name, "Итмцл", was first given to the land by the Wenlandi nomads and was passed on to the Shibans, who then split into the Doge Landians and Mountaintonians. The name was first used in Doge Land in around 1700 and the name has been used in Mountainton most likely before written records of the language exist.

History

Prehistory

The lands that now make up mainland Doge Land were first settled by the Wenlandi some time around 7000 BCE. Some believe that the Wenlandi were the earliest Shibans, however the most credible theory is that Shibans migrated to the coast of Doge Land around 4500 BCE.

The nomadic Wenlandi adopted more customs of the proto-Shibans, who eventually settled down on the coast forming the early towns of Doge Land. It is believed that the Wenlandi language developed from the proto-Shiban language, however this is disputed. Eventually, the Shibans developed a written language and united.

Shibe Empire

Some time near 1000 BCE, the Shibans formed the Shibe Empire, which consisted of the original Shiban city-states. After the formation, the Wenlandi fleed to their original homeland which we consider south-central Doge Land today. The Shibans expanded north into the land now inhabited by the Beponans, and partially into the uninhabited land in the west side of Doge Land. At some point, probably in the 9th century BCE, about 10000 Shibans fled the Shibe Empire into the mountains to escape religious persecution and the killing of political enemies of the empire. These people became what we know today as Mountaintonians after centuries of being left to their own devices.

In the 7th century BCE, the Shibe Empire led a campaign against the Wenlandian Theocracy. This failed, so they tried again in the 6th century BCE, and failed again. This started a chain of events which led to the downfall of the Shibe Empire, including going through 3 kings in the span of 6 months. In the 5th century BCE, the Shibe Empire collapsed.

Post-collapse

After the collapse of the Shibe Empire in the 5th century BCE, the empire split into several different states. The Beponans and Wenlandi eventually consolidated into their own kingdoms, and the Shibans were able to consolidate into the Kingdom of Shibe Bay in the 4th century BCE when they conquered the majority of the coast of modern Doge Land. In the west, the Mountaintonians had just started to leave the mountains and were conquering a few small patches of land at a time, eventually expanding into a large kingdom by the 1st century CE.

Things were mostly peaceful besides some border conflicts between the Wenlandi and the Mountaintonians for several centuries after the collapse of the Shibe Empire. In the 4rd century CE, the Shiban-Beponan Dual Monarchy was created. In the 6th century CE, the Dual Monarchy annexed the Wenlandi Theocracy and in the 13th century CE, the Doge Landian Republic was proclaimed, with Doge Land City as its capital.

First Mountaintonian War

In the early 16th century, tensions were at their boiling point between the Doge Landian Republic and the Kingdom of Mountainton. In 1521, Mountainton invaded the Beponan part of the Doge Landian Republic. This invasion caused the Doge Landians to scramble for a bit, but in the end the Doge Landians were able to push the Mountaintonians back outside of Doge Land.

After the Mountaintonians got pushed out of Doge Land, the Doge Landian soldiers continued going on through Mountainton. During their advance, the Mountaintonians pushed again, this time in the Wenlandi part of Doge Land. The Doge Landians pushed back the Mountaintonians again, and this time the advance into Mountainton met the other advance, creating one united front and encircling a lot of Mountainton. The army marched into Mountainton (the city) and forced the Mountaintonians to sign a treaty saying they would remove their troops from Doge Landian borders and not invade Doge Land again for another 100 years.

Second Mountaintonian War

In 1643, after the 100 years had passed, Mountainton invaded Doge Land once again, this time from all sides. However, the more organized and prepared Doge Landian army expected this attack, and pushed them back easily. The Mountaintonian army was in shambles after this, and they quickly surrendered.

The peace treaty this time was much more harsh- Doge Land would annex all of Mountainton and incorporate the country. The government of Mountainton was naturally opposed, and said no. The Doge Landians kept advancing after this until they entered Mountainton (the city) again, and made them agree to the peace treaty. Mountainton was fully integrated into the Doge Landian Republic in 1753.

Claiming of the Shibe Islands

In 2021, the Doge Landian Republic claimed the Shibe Islands, a cluster of islands in the Rainbow Islands. These islands had already been settled by a couple of native groups, however they were pushed off of their lands to make way for the settlers. This was highly disliked, and the natives were allowed to return to their lands. However, by the time they got back all of their villages had been modernized and replaced with regular Doge Landian towns. This angered the natives, however eventually they were outnumbered by people moving to the islands.

Third Mountaintonian Skirmish

In 2021, a border conflict between the Shibe Mountain Republic and the Doge Land Bay Republic in Doge Land led to a skirmish between the two states of Doge Land. It was decided that the Shibe Mountain Republic and Doge Land go their separate ways, for a better future for both nations instead of bloodshed.

In 2022, after realizing that they could not survive without each other, the nations reunited into the Second Republic of Doge Land. This change was met positively by most.

Geography

Coastal and central Doge Land is very flat, in most areas not going 10 meters above or below sea level. For most of central Doge Land, tropical rainforests make it harder to build suburban areas, so most of the population is concentrated in a few cities. On the coast, it is slightly cooler but still very humid and tropical. In western, mountainous Doge Land, there are many jagged peaks on the way up to the tallest peaks on the border between Doge Land and Ryccia.

There are two major rivers in Doge Land, one going down the northern side of the nation and one going down the southern side. The northern river passes through Mountainton and Bepono, while the southern river passes through Shibeton and Bork.
