Caleb Joshua "C.J." Sampaio was a Stoinian composer and conductor during the Stellar Ascension known primarily for Stoinian military marches. He is known as "The March King" for his many contributions to military institutions by making music for them. Among his best-known marches are "The Starwalker's March", "Our Proud Lion Forever" (National March of the Stoinian Star Kingdom), "Semper Ferocissimi" (official march of the Stoinian Royal Marine Force), "The First Line of Defence" (official march of the Stoinian Royal Navy), "Protector" and "Forever Stoinian".

Early life and education

Sampaio was born in the city of Trinas on Stoinia in a family with 13 siblings. His father was a man called João André Sampaio and his mother Payton Jackson who were both fourth generation Stoinians. João was a professional musician in the Royal Army Band and his mother a high school teacher. While his family didn't have many luxuries, he did come in contact with music from an early age. Being the oldest son and child of the family, he followed his father career and practiced band in middle and high school. At Layton Middle School he started to learn his first instrument, the trumpet. He continued his trumpet career and even picked up the trombone from time to time during his time at Roger Winton High School. During his musical training it was revealed that Sampaio had perfect pitch, unlike his father. His teacher had a somewhat short temper when it came to Sampaio as he often questioned their teachings and musical interpretation. This would eventually help him to gain his position within the Stoinian Royal Marine Force Band.

Career

After finishing high school, Sampaio wished to continues his studies at the Sinaia Music Academy. Here he would become an apprentice of Logan Edgars (trumpetist) and Elena Matei (composer). Here he broadened his musical knowledge and even picked up composing and conducting. At the end of his studies he would finish top of his class and many orchestras were looking forward to have him as one of their members. Many thought that Sampaio would become a prominent musician on Stoinia, but Sampaio himself had different plans.

In 1322 PD Sampaio auditioned for a position in the Stoinian Royal Marine Force Band. He was accepted and given the position of second trumpet. Here Sampaio fulfilled his dream to play music for the military which he saw as his way to serve his nation. The coming two years Sampaio played concerts across the entire planet. He even played with the band on the inauguration of the first Stoinian colony of Osiris. The conductor and Sampaio often clashed when it came to interpretations. This manifested in many behind the scenes talks to improve the pieces they played. This drive to improve music was noted by the then conductor Colonel Jim S. Stanton. Sampaio's stubbornness would eventually prove for the better as when Cl. Stanton, he handpicked Sampaio as his successor. Convinced that he would bring new life to the band.

It is then, in 1324 PD, that Sampaio became the conductor of Stoinian Royal Marine Force Band at the mere age of 24 T-years. With this commission came the rank of Captain and subsequently the greatest rank jump in the history of military bands. This was met with some opposition within the band, but Sampaio won the band's trust again by writing marches just for them. It is during interplanetary tours that King Iulian I heard these new marches. The King was so impressed that he requested Sampaio make marches. Sampaio agreed and started to make more and more marches. He liked it so much that he began to make even more in his free time. The King endorsed his work, ordering him to make marches for the Marine Force and the Royal Navy.

Sampaio continued the rest of his career writing and conducting marches. During his performances at military tattoos he often made quite a show and in some instances played the trumpet and conducted at the same time. This combined with the many new marches and martial Stoinian culture, made him a popular figure with Stoinian society. He became the face of the military musician and used it to further its interest. Many aspiring musicians looked up to him as a source of inspiration. He even was granted a spot in the Landing Walk of Fame because of his reputation. Nonetheless, Sampaio continued his work across the stars while performing on the new Stoinian colonies. This was part in King Iulian I's policy to keep close ties the new colonies. The many tours of bands and state visits across the colonies during the Starwalker's reign were common and those traditions remain to this day. Sampaio would also be influenced these many trips to improve his music. He used these influences in some of his works dedicated to certain colonies, giving them a personal musical element. These marches would be part of his Colonial Volume.

Personal life

On April 14th 1324 PD, Sampaio married Brianna Williams who he met at the Sinaia Music Academy. They received their first child the following year and continued the Stoinian pioneer spirit of having many children. In total they would have 12 children together and all of them would become musicians for different branches of the Stoinian military. All of them are buried with them at Lexington National Military Ceremony for their contributions. His children later told the public that their father was a great inspiration to them as they played music together with the whole family at home. His oldest son, Paul J. Sampaio would also become the conductor of the S. R. M. F. Band.

Sampaio also became famous during his lifetime, but didn't enjoy it. In an interview at his old age, he said that the fame often left him to publish his marches under a pseudonym. His colleagues however, insisted that he publish it by his real name. At events he was often a reserved man who didn't enjoy being in the spotlight. Except if he was playing or conducting. When playing and conducting, Sampaio was stern and focused, utterly devoted to his music while performing.

In his retirement, he moved to a ranch on Louisiana and enjoyed his last years as a true Stoinian pioneer. He would however come out of retirement in 1366 PD for a short time to honour King Iulian I The Starwalker's name at his funeral.

In total Sampaio wrote 156 marches, 14 suites and 20 overtures. Although his marches remain his most notable work to the public, his other works remain popular within music band throughout the star nation.
